Over the summer holidays Rugby High School has upgraded Microsoft Office from 2003 to 2007. One of the main issues with this is that Microsoft have introduced their new .DOCX file format making it incompatible with older versions such as Office 2003 which uses the .DOC format. If you have Office 2007, you can still open files which have been created in the older 2003 version. If you have Office 2003 however, you may not be able to open files created in the newer version of Office due to the new file format. Microsoft has released a compatibility pack that will allow you to use Office 2003 to open files created in the new version of word. This will convert the file made in Office 2007 so it can be opened, and amended in 2003. This compatibility pack is available HERE (Microsoft.com) Alternatively if you do not want to install the compatibility pack (it is highly recommended that you do) one way to avoid this problem is to save the files in .doc (Word) / .xls (Excel) / .ppt (PowerPoint) format as opposed to .docx (Word Without Macros) / .xlsx (Excel Without Macros) / .pptx (PowerPoint Without Macros) or .docm (Word With Macros) / .xlsm (Excel With Macros) / pptm (PowerPoint With Macros) that is native in Office 2007. Basically if it has an "x" or a "m" at the end it wont work! Simple solution is when you go to save your document, choose "Save As..." and after entering the filename of your choice, just select the 97-2003 format with the .doc (Word) / .xls (Excel) / .ppt (PowerPoint) extension from the drop down box to change the file format. Example below from Word 2007. Note: Depending on the version of Office, and its configuration, the text in files which have been converted from 2007 to 97-2003 format may not diplay correctly if a 'new' font has been used, this can be simply rectified by highlighting the incorrectly displayed text and changing the font, or proir to conversion changing all text to a 'classic' font such as times new roman or arial
