Upcoming events in the English department, Spring, 2010. Look out for an exciting term in the English department! Spring is the season for books and reading. Reading month begins on Monday, 8th February, kicking off with the Jessie Wright Memorial Poetry Evening on Thursday, 11th February. Pupils from years 7, 8 and 9 will take part in the recital competition and upper school poetry writing finalists will read their entries and the winners’ prizes will be awarded. This year, the poetry writing theme is Change. Year 7 will then begin their RiBiT reading and year 8 their BARC challenges. See the Library website for more details! All years 7 and 8 pupils will have a RiBiT or BARC booklet with all the information about the awards inside. For the week beginning pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 will not have any homework – for any subject. This is to give them the chance to read, read, read! Years 7 and 8 will be beginning RiBiT and BARC and years 7, 8 and 9 will all be reading for the sponsored read. This year, the beneficiary will be Talking Books. The week beginning 1st March will be book week. This year, we are linking with the Geography department for the exciting theme of Going Places. There will be a variety of books and reading events during the week – and look out for the now legendary book character fancy dress day on Friday. In addition to all this excitement, year 10 will have a poetry slam day with Dreadlockalien after their school exams on Friday, This event is now in its fifth year and has been thoroughly enjoyed by all participants. We hope we’ll have some year 10 students who want to enter slams at regional and national level. Year 9 will also get the chance to see the thrillingly terrifying play “The Woman in Black” as part of their Drama and English experience. This will be a great chance for them to see a small professional company using some amazing dramatic techniques and theatrical trickery to hair-raising effect! Years 12 and 13 English language students will be heading to Salford University for a conference on Thursday, 3rd February; Professor David Crystal and Michael Rosen are among the speakers on that day. Years 12 and 13 English literature students will be going to see the mighty “King Lear” at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford. Year 10 students from Mrs. Robinson’s and Mrs. Jolly’s year 10 classes will be going to see “Romeo and Juliet” – also at the Courtyard. Year 13 English Language students will be having another, we are sure, delightful and entertaining, visit to Bawnmore Infants School to support their study of Child Language Acquisition. It looks as if it will be yet another action-packed term. Oh yes, and we are sure that the students will have an enthralling and beneficial time in lessons and in completing homework tasks too!
