Upcoming Events Autumn 2009 PDF Print E-mail

It looks as if it will be yet another busy term in for students in the English Department! There are a number of events planned – as well as others later in the academic year.

Creative writing club will start again soon for pupils in the lower school. We have an enthusiastic new team of year 12 students – alumni of the RHS creative club themselves! – with great ideas for engaging and entertaining our younger pupils. The English department will join with the Library to continue to run book groups: the joint upper school book group which we ran with Harris School has been very successful and we hope to continue with that valuable and enjoyable link. Thanks to Ms Heather Penny-Larter of Harris School for her terrific enthusiasm for this project. We also hope to start a sixth form book group as there are a number of literature-loving students who relish the chance to meet to talk about books!

National Poetry Day will be on Thursday, 8th October. This year the theme is Heroes and Heroines, so look out for some related events around the school. On Thursday, November 5th, a group of year 10 students will be heading to the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford to see an RSC production of “Twelfth Night” which will support their GCSE coursework. Just a couple of weeks later, year 11 students will go to the Royal and Derngate Theatre in Northampton to see a stage adaptation of George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty Four” – the students’ GCSE English Literature prose set text. Thursday, 10th December will see English Literature students travelling up the M6 to Salford University for a Poetry Live conference.

There’s plenty on offer for the discerning reader and creative writer. As we say in relation to our annual spring book week: join in and have fun!
