Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages Department. We aim to make the learning of Modern Languages a useful and enjoyable experience. We hope to encourage girls' interest in other countries and ways of life, and to prepare them for any further language-learning that they may later undertake, for work or for pleasure. The department is housed in a modern building with excellent facilities including satellite TV/Video equipment in every room. French is studied from Year 7 onwards and Spanish is studied alongside French from Year 8 until the end of Year 9 when girls can opt to continue one or both languages to GCSE. Able linguists have the option of starting German in year 10 and taking this as an extra curricular GCSE. The GCSE course gives equal value to the four skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. As much use as possible is made of the language laboratory and of satellite TV, interactive whiteboards and other materials in addition to courses. The Department organizes and co-ordinates visits to France, Germany and Spain whenever possible and sixth formers are encouraged to go abroad for work experience in Year 12. Language clubs and activities, such as the Year 7 French Fairy Tale Day, are very popular. Year 7 enjoy acting out “Les trois petits cochons” in the Languages Department (click on image to open enlarged version in new window)
