In the world of Industrial and Commercial practices, Design and Technology prepares students for the technological society in which we live.
Design and Technology operates within a purpose-built block. All rooms have specialist equipment, offering multi-media opportunities, including a
well equipped central resource area. Students are taught to develop their design and technology capabilities through combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to manufacture quality products. They will widen their understanding of designing and making by investigating products and finding out about the work of designers and the manufacturing industry. As an integral part of the designing process, students use computers, including computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM).
All students in years 7, 8 and 9 follow modular courses involving many areas of Design and Technology They are taught all aspects of the design process and to develop their own ideas, knowledge and skills. We aim to encourage problem solving, imagination, inventiveness and flexibility. Students’ work is continually assessed in Years 7, 8 and 9 and an End of Key Stage 3 Teacher Assessment Level is awarded. In KS4, students have a choice within an option block to select GCSE Full Course Resistant Materials or GCSE Full Course in Food and Nutrition.
The department often works with outside agencies to enrich the girl’s experience of design.
The Design and Technology department regularly offers extension sessions to students to enable them to extend their studies and offer additional support where needed.
Two members of the support staff also assist students throughout the day during their practical and theory experiences.
