The House System at Rugby High School is a valuable part of school life. It provides our students with a chance to improve their team-work and sense of comradeship. There are chances to earn points for your house in and outside of the curriculum. Examples include a good piece of written work, a high test result or a worthwhile contribution in class discussions. As well as this we raise a strong sense of team spirit at our annual events of 'Sports day' and 'Pink Day' everyone is keen to represent their house and to earn points!
The houses are all named after famous, successful women, who excelled in their field during their lives. Sue Ryder (1923-2000) led many charitable organisations, the most well known being Sue Ryder Care. Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) is one of the most significant sculptors of the 20th century, her work helping immeasurably in the development of modern art. Helen Sharman (1963-..) was the first Briton in space, beating 13 000 applicants to get there. All of these women are role-models for others due to their incredible achievements.
To promote house spirit and get the whole school contributing to their House we host a number of fun events throughout the year. The main event is Sports Day, which is a great opportunity for pupils to earn points for their house and have a great time on the way. The whole school participates in Sports Day (even sixth formers) coming together to show their sporting ability and cheer on their house mates. There is always much excitement and it is a lovely opportunity for the whole house to pull together and earn House points.
But as the saying goes ‘it’s the taking part that counts’, so this year we held an additional alternative sports day for those pupils who are not so traditionally sporty. This event was a huge success with pupils competing in events such as a Belly Bopping race, an egg and spoon race, an obstacle course contest and Welly Wanging! And despite the rain everyone had an amazing time and we even had some of the teachers compete in the Welly Wanging (a sight not to be missed!)
As well as these two main sporting events we have also held an indoors Rounders game for the year sevens at which there was a brilliant turn out and much support for the teams. And for those who have talents off the games court we held a Talent Contest earlier in the year which despite some technical difficulties was a great success and the money we raised from the show went to the winning Forms charity. Along with all of these events the school also participates in a number of charity days such as Pink Day in which the whole school goes pink mad and competes to win house points and the title of ‘Best Pink’. There are also a number of fund raising activities on Pink Day and this year we raised a whopping £1253.07. The success of these events couldn’t have been achieved without the Charity Committee, Becky Setchell and Mrs Moore so a huge thanks to them for their hard work.
So as you can see the house system is very active within school and the events which we have throughout the year enable students to win points for their house. This year Hepworth won the house cup so congratulations to all those in Hepworth - you really worked well to win those points!
